A winter’s day in California with grandkids

Only in California do grandchildren use “seriously,” “totally,” and “actually” more than “I want.”

Only in California do you go for a nice leisurely Saturday drive to the pier twenty miles away, and the car seat-bound grandchild is able to complete a two hour nap in traffic gridlock before you get there.

Only in California when you find a parking place right where you want to be does it move you to tears.

Only in California can a grandparent unload a packed stroller, fiddle with it for at least ten minutes trying to expand it, and no one notices.

Only in California does it take you another ten minutes to find someone without six-pack abs and not wearing a bikini who looks like they might know anything about strollers.

Only in California do you finally out of desperation grab any passing pedestrian, point to the still-compacted stroller, and ask, “Hey, man, do you know how to unfold this contraption?”

Only in California can you take a refreshing dip in the Ocean in January and not suffer from frostbite.

Only in California you “do lunch” with your grandkids, including citrus from your backyard tree.

Only in California does the impressive surfer shooting the glistening curl unzip his wetsuit under the outdoor shower to reveal thinning gray hair and a potbelly.

Sundae sand castleOnly in California does a sand castle resembling a fudge sundae prompt you to stand in line at a Cold Stone for twenty minutes for a $5 ice cream sundae in January.

Only in California can you stuff a fully expanded stroller in the back of your SUV to drive home.

Welcome to winter grandparenting in California.

Oh Penny, you hit the nail right on the head. We are so blessed. The picture of your grandchildren playing in the sand on a January day is precious. And, yes, only in California!

Love the post… I loved the Getty that day, but hearing about all your fun made me wish I had been a mom that day instead of a grown up. Thanks for being the best grandma three kids could have.
