What do you want to be when you grow up?

Imagine waking up and knowing what you want to be. Beethoven composed music at four. Tiger Woods wanted to be a golfer from age three. I wonder what age he was when he decided he wanted to be a philanderer? And Bill Gates wanted to be rich since forever.

Not me. I wasn’t so lucky. I didn’t know what I wanted to be. I’m still trying to figure it out. I wondered what the magic was. How do you just know?

Rodeo trick riderA trick rider, in shiny skintight turquoise pants, rode a galloping horse around the rodeo arena. She flipped and twisted her body over the Quarter horse, then pushed her body horizontally along the side of the trained animal. She suspended herself perpendicular to the horse. It seemed everything you could ever do during a gymnastic floor routine she did with a foot in the stirrup. I had one question — at what moment did she say to herself, “I want to take jumping jacks to the next level”? Did the half-blind woman on America’s Got Talent swinging flaming swords have a similar epiphany?

I think my grandson experienced that moment already. Pirates, held up at the San Diego Embarcadero, dressed in their best knickers took us on tour of their ship staffed with black skull and crossbones flag. The Bug absorbed all the costumed guides had to say. As we left, he looked longingly back. “Grandma,” he said, “I forgot to tell the pirate something.”

We returned. The Bug tapped the head pirate with mustaches for eyebrows on the shoulder, and asked, “I’m thinking perhaps of becoming a pirate one day myself.”

White water rafting sequenceAfter our last trip, I’m thinking perhaps of becoming a senior white water rafting guide. Our guide had instructed us of safety precautions. Double click on the photographs to zoom in to find Mr. Green Jeans, my son-in-law, as he was about to experience summer teeth first hand – where summer in your mouth and summer in the water, my sister and I (the matching bookends, one on the port side and one on the starboard side) who took command and hollared out to the dubious crew, “Improvise.”   That’s my son Hot Wheelz in the front looking all buff and in control.  And my new comrade Tamela, who chose a very inopportune time to raise her hand to use the restroom.

Success!!

Actually it’s the hunky looking guides enticing me to consider this line of work.
