The wad

A wad of cash in the pocket is good.  A wad in a Speed-o can be good, but not always – depending whether it’s in the front or the back.  A wad of paper towels is helpful when there’s been a spill.

But a wad of gauze as big as a tennis ball shoved up your down-south parts is never comfortable.

I haven’t been blogging as much lately and more mindful of our family’s health, because during my sister’s visit, she received the dreaded phone call that she has cervical cancer.  And adding insult to injury, after yesterday’s doctor appointment to confirm the disease, she now has the “dreaded wad.”

Cancer doesn’t run in our family (until now), and the last few days has been a series of phone calls between us poking fun at the disease, like “how can I have cancer, I’m not even skinny” or “play the cancer card whenever you can to get what you want,” and sleepless tearful nights when I’m alone, arguing with the powers-that-be why my 49-year-old sister is too young and healthy to allow this enemy to come and invade her body.

At her appointment on Wednesday, the oncology gynecologist (just say that three times) did the gauze wad.  Who did he think he was?  The little Dutch boy plugging a hole in the dam?  Yesterday was the appointment with the oncology radiologist.  Tuesday she is scheduled for a PET scan to find out what stage of the disease she has.  We are hopeful for a low number.

Since my sister has been single for a number of years, the doctor told her she’ll have to use a tube to prevent scar tissue from developing.  “I’m thinking it would be easier to find a man,” she said.

We both laughed.   We both knew finding tubing at Home Depot would be easier.

P.S.  Please keep Holly in your prayers and thoughts.
