The corny geek

There’s nothing worse than a computer geek who thinks he’s funny.

They make jokes about people named Tim Berners-Lee. Like… is that Bruce Lee’s brother? They pretend to look pensive, stroking a fake beard.

So this HTML instructor starts making jokes about the web authoring language saying you don’t need to know everything about a foreign tongue to order lunch. What does that mean? Today I’ll go across the street to Togo’s and toss out a few words like blockquote, hyperlink, or horizontal rule and they’ll know I want the roast beef special? First he’s talking about taking small baby steps, then suddenly he’s quoting the Raven.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`’Tis some visitor,’ I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.’

While others in the class may be impressed, I’m getting a little scared.

“Yes!” he exclaims, as he waits for a file to save, “I like to think that means I’m faster than a computer,” As I hear the computer process, I’m guessing it’s thinking, “I’m just messing with this guy’s head.”

He’s engaged the students, including me, into making a sample web page about a make-believe toy company. He gives us some facts to include in the toy company’s bio. He says the company began in the 17th Century making puppets for Napoleon.

That’s just crazy. Everyone knows Napoleon was emperor at the start of the 19th Century.

Still I thought you’d enjoy seeing my work in progress. Thank heavens for the Photoshop class last week, or I never would have been able to get Napoleon in a box.
