I miss the pitter patter of little feet running to greet me at the door. I know you’re thinking, get a dog. But I prefer to make the unscheduled stop at the grandkids and watch them scurry to the door. Or maybe that’s why I flew down my youngest, at 6’3” and work-out buff, definitely not little. He benched 375 pounds yesterday, he said. I don’t know much about weights, but that’s two of me.
“Let’s stop and see the kids,” said Cheezy when I picked him up from the airport yesterday. He was anxious to see how they’d grown.
“We’ve got the baby trained,” bragged the Bug. “Go get my laser gun,” he commanded and pointed into the living room. The Mouse turned his head this way and that looking for the object, then shrugged his little shoulders, made no noise, and did the “all gone” open palm motion. The Bug pointed in which direction, and the Mouse brought it to him. “Hit the Worm,” he then said, and he obediently gave a little slap to his older sister.
“Go hit the Bug,” the Worm said. The Bug started running and the Mouse was in a distant second.
“If he gets in trouble,” the GAP shouted, “you two are in double trouble.” It’s great to be in the middle of family.
Last night the grandkids were having a sleepover when Hot Wheelz arrived for the holiday. Bruce, the dog, came too. More pitter patter. The Mouse wasn’t sure he wanted to give a fishy kiss to Bruce.
Cheezy’s main goal in our family game of very amateur croquet was to get any neighboring player’s ball as far from the wicket as possible. The game was progressing rather slowly, and since we only had two days until Christmas to finish, we made up our own rules. Each player got two hits per turn, and we moved the wickets into a straight line. Hot Wheelz won.
Everyone’s pulling their weight. So far so good; we’re all still speaking. Nothing’s better than a full frig, and no room at the inn.
