Never give up

“Mom, I had a really weird thought,” said the familiar voice over the cell phone connection.  “I think I might actually graduate from college.  I’ve had so many stops and starts.  Today’s the first day where I can actually see myself with a degree.”

Cheezy, last to join the family and sometimes last to get it, graduated high school by the hair on his chinny-chin-chin.  We weren’t sure he was going to make the Pomp and Circumstance stroll until the night before.

Moms have a talent for second-guessing their kids.  When the chocolate chips disappear, you pretty much know which one of your children scarfed them down.  When the family car ends up wrapped around a tree, and an unscathed kid claims he, for no reason at all, lost control while driving on a clear night on a perfectly straight street, you suspect from the skid marks a failed E-brake turn.  Etcetera, etcetera…  Moms know what I’m talking about.

So because parents get their kids, oh sooooo well, even though the kids will never admit it, I suggested he wait to enroll in a junior college until he was ready.  If I’d pushed, it wouldn’t have ended well.  “Down the road, no one will know whether you started college right out of high school or you waited until you were twenty,” I told him.

I remember the smile.  He was relieved.  I just had no idea “twenty” was so far away!

“Want something for your fridge?” he’d asked me last week.  The A+, 50 points out of a possible 50, paper hangs on the frig by a magnet next to the Worm’s scary lost kitty picture.
