How to make churro bits

Well, I found another job [1] I’ll probably never take up professionally — churro maker.  I had purchased a boxed mix because I thought the grandkids would enjoy baking them.

Ever hear the phrase if it’s free, you just haven’t been billed yet?  Well, I have, and it is true.

[2]You can find the neatest things at 99¢ stores.  Sometimes you get real bargains; other times not so much so.  My menagerie of reading glasses distributed evenly all over the house — great buy.  The churro mix maybe not.

The instructions on the churro mix were in Spanish.  My Spanish is limited to knowledge of introducing myself, finding the bathroom, and the color of the dog de mi amigo.  I’d once bought yellow cake mixes on sale with instructions in Russian, but I simply followed directions on a Pillsbury box.

By the time I calculated out how much 2.5 cm was in inches, my grandson, the Bug, discovered English instructions on the other side panel.  Only they failed to include translations for the amount of ingredients to add.  I deduced that taza meant cup.  The Bug read the next instruction:  …boil water and before ebullition pour in Churro mix.  “What does ebullition mean?” I asked him.

“I dunno,” he said.

Well at least I’m not dumber than an eight-year-old.  We looked it up at dictionary.com [3].  (It means seething or overflowing with emotion.  I’d never before thought about how water felt when brought to a boil.  I could only imagine.)

The Bug dumped in the measured dry mixture, perhaps too swiftly, into the boiling water.  A splash of hot water landed on his forearm.  A few tears later, I told him, “There’s no crying in churro making.”  I finished stirring in the mix while he held his arm under icy cold water.

Once mixed, the steps instructed to squeeze the dough out to a length of six inches from a frosting bag included in the box.  The bag was attached to a special churro tip for ridges.  I squeezed and squeezed.  There’s no way a child could do this.  Maybe Paul Bunyan [4].  The dough came out in little bits, two inches at the most.

“Why’d you make one for Jesus?” the Bug asked.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Churros [5]“Well, it’s shaped like a J.”  How sweet, I thought.  After all, it was Sunday.  When the plastic bag developed holes, dough oozed out from all over, like water spurting from a leaking water balloon.  I took the Bug’s initial idea and ran with it.  I rolled the dough into long spindly strips between my palms.  I shaped the strips into L’s and R’s for the grandkids.  I rolled a “C” for Couponman, because G for grandpa is harder.

“Let’s take some churros to my friend around the block,” I suggested.  I had an extra ”C.”  Carla was the closest (and favored) recipient.

Okay, so maybe the churro mix wasn’t my best buy.  And it was definitely a profession I’d pass on.  But the churro bits sure were tasty.
