I promised myself when my December baby, Coco, was born, that I would never do one Christmas thing until after her birthday. And I have not. Her birthday has always been her special day, sans Christmas decorations, leftover red wrapping paper with green trees, no combination gifts, no frosted sugar cookies in the shapes of Christmas balls. I won’t even eat one goodie that resembles a candy cane.
So during that week between Thanksgiving and her birthday, I diet. I always plan on losing ten pounds that week in preparation for December 5th, and feel good if I get four off.
I started the groundwork two weeks ago. We brought the elliptical downstairs into the family room. I planned on stepping through some of my favorite television shows. “Aren’t you going to use it?” Couponman asked me after it sat in the room, unused, for a couple of days.
“I will I just have to get used to it being there first,” I said. Besides I still had a few days before Thanksgiving then.
So last week, I went to the gym four times, watched television every night while ellipticaling and hula hooping, and even did five hours of yard work on Saturday.
All I have to say, today, December 5th, is Bring It On! Let the eating and the merriment begin.

I love your comment about “having to get used to it first”!!! : )
“What do you do to prepare for the holidays?”
1. Look at my checkbook.
2. Start crossing names off of my gift list
3. Repeat.
So that’s why I haven’t received a gift from you in a VERY long time.
Being one of those unfortunate people to be born in December — Coco is very lucky that you don’t “combine”. I hated always getting birthday/Christmas gifts. HATED it! So I moved my birthday to June. Much better.
Coco is very lucky that you have always made it a special day for her!
You’re such a thoughtful mother. When I was a kid, my best friend had a Dec. 16 birthday. One of her birthday treats was having the tree up for her birthday. A different philosophy, but it’s the thought that counts! Of course, most people today are putting up their artificial trees before it’s even December, so I admire you for putting yours off.
