Couponman doesn’t usually take the time to plan his day.  He’s retired.  He just goes where he wants to go when he wants to go.  That is until Veteran’s Day.

His itinerary is planned out by a number of freebies in his possession.  He’s printed out a coupon for a free cinnamon French toast breakfast at Ruby’s Diner.  From there he’s got a coupon for lunch at Applebee’s.  “I’m going to order a steak dinner to go,” he says.

“They let you order take out?”

“Sure.  They’re so crowded,” he said (from last year’s experience).  “They don’t care.  But they love veterans.  Besides I have to get it to go.“

“Why?”

“If I don’t, I’ll miss out on Chili’s,” he said.  “They make you dine in.”  He picked up the phone and dialed.  “Hey,” he said into the phone.  “know where I’m going tomorrow?”  He sorted through the printouts in his hands, reading them off to Hot Wheelz.  “If I’m still hungry I can stop by Claim Jumper for a dessert or Outback for a Bloomin’ Onion.  It’s like my trick or treat day.”

There was quiet while the other end of the phone did the talking.  “No,” Couponman instructed.  “Take a copy of your Honorable Discharge.  It looks better than your Veteran’s card.”  Hot Wheelz had served in the Navy in Bahrain during the Gulf War.  “Eat hardy,” he said as he hung up.  It’s a sure thing that after this day of feasting, Couponman would never fit into his dress blues from 1968.

“What’d he say?” I asked.

“He’s excited,” Couponman said with a big smile on his face.  “He’s going to Applebee’s.”

In all seriousness, I want to express my gratitude to all those who recognize the sacrifices of our military.  Thanks Ruby’s, Chili’s, Applebee’s, Claim Jumper, Outback, and all those other establishments for your contributions to show appreciation for all our servicemen do for us.

Remember that while the food may be free for our veterans on this day of remembrance, they paid a price to keep us safe.  Thanks to those Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard men who have and continue to protect our freedoms.

Eat hardy, Veterans.  You deserve it.

That’s great that Phil has so much fun with this day each year–And he deserves it! It’s just too bad that last spring here in AZ, Chili’s, Applebee’s, and Carrabba’s (Sp?) all decided that they couldn’t afford to have Teacher Appreciation Day anymore with similiar deals.
