Gold leaf

Square foot gardening [1]Yesterday I harvested the first fruits of my labor.  Actually it was the second harvest.  Four hungry caterpillars got to the cabbage first.  Guess they are organic savvy, going green and all, and proving you are what you eat.  They were exactly the same color as the cabbage!  If that’s the case, maybe they did me a favor.

I grabbed a pair of scissors, those little safety kids’ pair that keep your fingers intact (can’t be too careful since last Rosh Hashanah [2]), and marched out to the colorful growing (except for the cabbage) garden.  I snipped a couple of leaves from the green and red romaine lettuce plants for my tuna sandwich.

Let’s see five leaves.  I calculated in my head.  Based on the $325 price tag for the “clean dirt” in the organic gardening boxes [3], that’s a pretty hefty price for five leaves of lettuce.  More like gold leafed.   I’m counting on a bumper crop of corn to break even.  :-)

I’d been babysitting two peaches (and I don’t mean my grandkids).  I mean my cute dwarf peach tree expecting twins.  Right on top were two of the most perfectly formed fruits (the only two on the whole 2′ tall tree.)  Then today I went outside and they were missing!  Without a trace.  Fred, the large neighborhood cigar smoking, squirrel [4] stole my two peaches.  Since he’s eating the fruits of my labor, I might as well adopt him.

My Daddy always used say “knee high by the 4th of July” meant a good corn crop! looks like you will break even! Have you noticed that almost none of the stores have yellow corn on the cob anymore? And I’m sorry the white corn tastes bland!

No garden for me. It’s been a particularly wet spring here. I still have an occasional duck couple visit the pond that used to be my back yard. The frogs in the wet field behind my yard are singing Disneyland tunes.
