Just last weekend I played games with seniors. Playing with grandkids is about the same. No one still knows what they’re doing, but at least they have an excuse.
I cherry-picked (punny thing to do in a game called Apples to Apples) cards that could be read and understood by a four-year-old and a seven-year-old. This is the game, remember, where picking the best synonym for a selected category wins.
First up — Evil. The four-year-old Worm, a little puzzled, didn’t think any of the cards in her hand were very evil. I spied them and pointed to Halloween. She disagreed. “I don’t think Halloween’s evil,” she corrected me. “I dressed up like a princess and got candy.” Right, not very scary.
She passed on my help and picked her own card for the category Deadly. When the judge read the cards aloud, one was George Washington. I had left the card in the game, because just last week, I’d bragged I could name all the presidents. I’d started the grandkids on this feat, too. “That’s my card,” the worm smiled, fully satisfied with her choice.
“He’s not deadly,” poked her brother.
“Well, he’s dead,” she replied.
The Bug wasn’t doing well with cards that didn’t fit much of anything. The next category was Horrifying. All three players tossed in a card. I read the choices. Marriage was one of them. I thought it was my husband’s card. Instead the seven-year-old Bug claimed it. “I have to say that marriage is horrifying,” he sighed. “I hate the kissing part.”
The last category was Fun. The Worm needed help. I suggested she play the card Board games from her hand. “What’s a board game?” she asked.
“Kind of like the game we’re playing,” I answered.
“Where’s the board?” she whispered.
We each took turns telling bedtime stories. The Worm’s story involved puppies named Spike and Sparkles. It’s good she could put the “really special” names she had selected for her baby brother to good use. I knew I was old when she asked me to pause my story so she could get a drink.
