Day at the movies

Life is never predictable.  Some days an action flick, some days a melodrama, some days a comedy, and some days a tragedy.  Who knew the the scripting yesterday could encompass them all.

The grandkids opened the film festival with a subdued action flick — Lethal Weapon Wii.  As the Bug threw imaginary darts at the screen, the controller flew from his hand, landing it square in the middle of the flat screen TV.  The over-the-top pyrotechnics exploded the TV as the curtain fell for intermission.

“Let’s make lunch,” I suggested, after Academy Award winning performances in the earlier action movie turned horror turned tragedy,“and have a picnic outside.”  When I came out with hot dogs, the grandkids had arranged patio chairs in a row facing the cinder block wall.  “It looks like a movie theater,” I said, sitting down in the front row.  “Wow, this is the most realistic 4-D movie I’ve ever seen.”  The kids looked at me like I was a little off.  A little more off than usual.  They took seats on either side of me.

“It’s so real looking,” I continued.  “See the leaves blow.  You can almost feel the breeze.”

The Worm was getting into it.  “I feel it, Grandma.  I really do.”  Of course, this is the little girl who thinks the cats-eye marble being pulled from Grandpa’s ear was magic.

“It’s like a National Geographic documentary,” agreed the Bug.  “But don’t they usually have a narrator telling you what’s happening?”

“The birds tweet,” I said in my best radio voice.  I’ve got the face for radio, too.  “A car passes by in the distance,” I say.  “The birds tweet, again.  Listen.”

Okay, so watching documentaries from the cheap seats is not all that exciting.  A little slow — kinda like Out of Africa.
