Connecting the dots

“Should I get some bacon?” I asked.

“I’m always up for bacon,” he answered.

“Did you used to watch Mr. Ed when you were little?” I asked.

“What’s that got to do with bacon?” Couponman asked.  He didn’t even see it coming.  One minute he’s envisioning a plate of eggs and sizzling bacon, and now he’s wondering if I’ve lost all sense and aware that bacon comes from pigs.

“It makes perfect sense,” I said.  “I was just thinking how much the Worm loves bacon.  Remember Curly from City Slickers ate bacon with every meal.  And how did they get around?  On horses.  And Mr. Ed is a horse.  I was wondering if Mr. Ed was on TV now would the grandkids enjoy it as much as I did.”

Seems like there are those in life who have an uncanny ability to connect the dots.  And those who don’t.  My granddaughter is one of those few who can.  At five years old, she was telling us about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, for whom we celebrate this holiday.  “Abraham Lincoln was a great president of the United States.  He got shot in the head and died,” she told us.  “If you get shot in the head, you die.”

“Well, there was a lady a few weeks ago who got shot in the head,” my husband explained to her, “and she didn’t die.”  My husband compassionately followed the story of Congresswoman Griffin.

You could see the Worm processing what she’d just been told.  “Well, Grandpa,” she said, confident in the way she’d connected the dots, “that was a miracle by God.”

Thanks to those courageous enough to serve our country on our behalf.  To presidents like Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Truman who have left a legacy that we all enjoy today.  To our current leaders, may they always be mindful of miracles.
