“What’s the matter?” Nae, a good friend and wise mentor of a younger age, laughed after I had tripped in front of her. “Your kid’s umbilical cord get in the way?” Me, a little clingy?
Could it be time for the natural evolution of things — living and otherwise?
Last week, Hot Wheelz purchased a new truck. Not his namesake, a Hot Wheels, for the canvas road map, personalized with hand drawn images of frequented places — Palm Park, the library, the Thirty Drug where we bought 5¢ a scoop cones, McDonald’s, our house and church. And a heliport, just because. Not even one of my hand-me-downs, like the Vanagon and Isuzu. His very first new truck. Without a word of advice from me.
The Worm’s birthday was a couple of weeks ago and the GAP never consulted me on birthday party plans. The colorful balloons and pin the wings on the fairy went on without a hitch. Coco moved into her new apartment, and I carried not even one box from my attic to her new pad. She didn’t even borrow my Honda Pilot to move the memories to their new location.
Cheezy got straight A’s in his summer classes, without one editing job from dear ole’ mom on his assigned papers.
Last night we saw Boyz II Men. Maybe Boyz to Older Men. While it wasn’t the End of the Road, there certainly had been a changing of the guards.
Yesterday I received a text message in my Inbox from Hot Wheelz after my recent visit, It’s weird not having leftover lasagna. Nae would have been proud.

Yes, I am. As hard as it is to let them go they are sprouting their wings and now flying because of the mental, emotional and spiritual support, guidance and encouragement their mom has given them over the years. Look with amazement on how well they fly, so independent… so responsible.
